What time do I need to book a pick-up?

One of the things my friends, family and guests asks most is how long before their flight should they arrange transport to the airport.

I suggest you book your transfer to the airport timed to arrive at least 2 hours before your departure flight time. You would be surprised how quickly time can pass if you get stuck in traffic. That’s why my drivers know whether to stick to the main roads or take the back streets.

Here’s an example of leaving a resort in Tabanan to the airport taking more than 2 hours in medium traffic, which would mean leaving at minimum 4 hours before your departure flight.

I recommend looking at travel times using Google Maps and then calculating your pickup time conservatively.

What queues are there through Bali Airport?

It’s also helpful to know that you need to go through 4 queues that can be anything from a couple of minutes to an hour depending on the departure traffic.

The first queue is the security check going from the arrivals hall through to the airline check-in counters. Unlike some other airports, non-flying guests cannot go past the security check to the airline check-in counters. Have your passport and departure ticket (I just load mine on my phone and show them that). Security will check them both with varying degrees of efficiency.

The second queue is for your flight check-in at the airline counter. If you took my advice and arrived at the airport at least 2 hours before your departure time you should be ok. Beware, Denpasar airport check-in can be notoriously slow.

Just like any airport, your airline will have employed local staff, so please do not expect the same service level that you have when checking in from your home country. These jobs are pretty much minimum wage, so don’t take your frustration out on the counter staff. They are often overworked and under-payed, so just being nice will get better results than getting angry at the slow process. It’s not their fault.

The third queue is the main security check after the airline counters. This has improved lately with an upgrade in the style and number of security channels. Take your laptop out, but you can leave your shoes on.

The fourth and final queue is for immigration and this can get really long. Indonesian immigration takes checking for overstayers seriously and is notoriously slow. There are usually only around 4-6 officers on deck to service all international (non-Indonesian) passport holders.

  2. Hello, I will be in Bali with my adult daughter between 8/25/23 and 9/5/23 visiting Canguu, Ubud, and Nusa Dua. I would like to hire a private driver to transport us to each city along with in between days for sightseeing for waterfall travel, shopping and other sights. I would prefer the same driver if possible to drive us to our destinations needed which I will organize and provide the dates ahead of time. Do you provide a private driver service not to just the airport? I would also like to book and airport transfer at the end of my trip when I leave Bali on 9/5/23 at 7 am.

    I could not find Lepang among the list of destinations.

  4. Hi, I’m looking to book a minivan for 6 passengers with 4 suitcases on the 27th Aug, pick up in Ubud at 6.00am. I can’t see any minivan options, only Avanza and Innova 6-seater SUVs. Would these be large enough?

    I am trying to book an airport transfer online and it doesn’t load to the next page. Is there another way to book?

    • Hi Val. I just tried the exact same airport transfer booking and it processed just fine and completed the booking. I also checked the Stripe payment gateway, and there were no failed transactions so your order was never submitted. I also checked the server logs and the form was never submitted.

      Perhaps you can try again ad please make sure all the required fields are filled out.
