You may think that Bali is all about the sun, sand and surf, but you would be missing out if you didn’t know about the festivals in Bali. From flying kites to live music, Bali has annual festivals that are getting increasing numbers of visitors.
Since the beginning of time, human beings have been gathering in masses with those they share common grounds with. Historically, we put aside our differences a few times a year to come together to celebrate our culture and traditions, religious beliefs, food, art, and music – with the first documented music festival dating back to 6th century BC in Ancient Greece during the Panhellenic Games. The music competition was dedicated to Apollo (the Greek god of music.)
Today, festivals can be found all over the world at almost any time of the year. From massively produced Electronic Music festivals (think Tomorrowland or Ultra), to wild and fun parades (like Toronto’s Gay Pride Parade or Sydney’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras), to dangerously delicious food festivals (like Hokitika Wild Food Festival or FAWC). These festivals give us a chance to not only celebrate but to learn more about each other and our society.
In Bali alone, there is a range of festivals throughout the year. With a vibrant history of art, music, and dance, the island of the Gods offers a unique experience for its visitors. While being a unique province of Indonesia, Bali’s population is a mixing pot of people from every region of the Indonesian Archipelago. This means you can get a bang for your buck when it comes to experiences and learning new things while you’re in Bali. You may come across Javanese, Sumatrans, Makassarese, Sasak, Sundanese, and many more ethnic groups sharing both traditional and Western art forms – all on this one small island.

Bali Blues Festival
The Blues made its way from the deep south of USA in the mid-1800s all the way to Bali where it is kept alive by devoted musicians and listeners alike. The Bali Blues Festival is an annual music festival hosted by the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and gives a stage for local, national, and international Blues musicians.
It is normally held over a 2-day event on Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua where everyone can experience a variety of world-class performers and the beauty of the waves crashing against Nusa Dua’s reef.
The festival receives direct support from the Badung Regency Government, the Bali Provincial Government, and the Ministry of Tourism with hopes that Bali will become a centre for some of the most notable Blues concerts in Indonesia and Asia. The Bali Blues Festival shouldn’t be missed if you consider yourself a fan of the Blues.

Ubud Village Jazz Festival
The improvisational art of Jazz can be found in just about any corner of the globe, and if you’re a true Jazz lover, you will definitely appreciate the performances at the Ubud Village Jazz Festival. Initially formed as a community concert, the UVJF aimed to provide a platform (literally) for local Jazz artists which then grew into a 2-day festival lined with local and international Jazz musicians, workshops for Jazz students and new talents, and heaps of food.
The stages are shared by Jazz musicians and bands from Indonesia, Germany, Holland, South Korea, Australia, Russia, France, and Italy – with many more lined up for future events. Over the years since its conception, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival has built a reputation as the “can’t miss” event for Jazz advocates.

This Is Life Festival
Hosted on Bali’s little sister island, Gili Air, This is Life Festival aims to fuse music and culture into one experience. Enjoy a full 24 hours of letting loose on a magical island while surrounded by the refreshing ocean and swaying coconut trees. This party serves you a musical platter of Minimal House, Techno, Deep House, Psychedelic Trance, Progressive, and Tech House – all played by notable Bali-based DJs as well as international acts.
This is Life Festival is annually held at Lucky’s Bar, and welcomes hundreds of tourists and locals who get together and enjoy nothing but good vibes. The organizers aim to support the local Gili Air community by investing the profits from ticket sales back into the welfare of the island and its people. Note: due to relatively small scale of both the festival and the island, the limited tickets sell out quickly. And if you’re Indonesian – you get in for free!

Kuta Beach Festival
Kuta has been a popular choice of stay for many since the 1970s, being home to some of the first tourism-focused amenities like hotels, resorts, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. Kuta Beach, known by some as Sunset Beach, has become a world-famous spot for swimming, surfing, tanning, or just catching a Bali sunset. Every October, Kuta Beach becomes the grounds for the Kuta Beach Festival – an event spanning 3 days of Music, food, clothing, surfing, and tons of activities to indulge in.
Their main stage of the music festival features some of Bali and Indonesia’s most legendary musicians and bands such as Superman is Dead, Navicula, and Saint Loco, to name only a few. Towards the latter part of each night, the stage gets manned by notable Bali-based DJs. Other programs during the Kuta Beach Festival are; the clothing festival which showcases unique brands, vendors, and clothing lines from Indonesia, and the food festival, where you can feast on the best of foods available on the island.
Among other activities are the Sunset Run – a 5km marathon along the beach, a surfing contest, a skateboard competition, traditional dances, fireworks, and games. The organizers and sponsors of the Kuta Beach Festival openly invites tourists and locals to experience and celebrate Indonesia’s broad variety of creativity and talents. And with all that in one package, entry to the festival is free for everyone of all ages.

Finn’s New Year’s Music Festival
As a world-class beach club, Finn’s proudly boasts an enormous facility with 4 pools, 5 restaurants, 9 bars (yes you read that correctly), and is one of the most sought-after sunset spots in Canggu. On a regular day, guests can experience live DJs paired with vocalists who perform from afternoon into the moonlit hours.
For the past few years, Finn’s Beach Club has hosted one of the most anticipated New Year’s Eve parties in Bali and at the end 2018, the Finn’s New Year’s Music Festival was packed with over 10,000 eager party people. The big stage is the main attraction for everyone, which headlined acts in past such as Khalid, Camelphat, Lost Frequencies, and Robin Schulz. The music festival is split into two days – New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day – both of which feature different lineups.
If you looking to ring in the coming year with a massive party, this is it. Combined with the fact that you’ll be spending your New Year’s in Bali, this party is one you can’t miss. Tickets at the Finn’s New Year’s Music Festival tend to sell out quickly – so I advise that you check out their website as soon as it’s announced.

Ultra Beach Bali
The world-renowned Ultra Music Festival has always been a priority item on every festival-goer’s bucket list since 1999 and has provided a stage for some of the biggest names in Electronic Dance Music like Kaskade, Skrillex, Fatboy Slim, Avicii, Martin Garrix, Hardwell, and many more. The festival has become so Ultra-popular (pun intended) that they decided to expand out of Miami Beach and share their concept with the rest of the world who were already hungry for top-tier EDM festivals. Ultra Beach Bali then became part of their expansion, regularly hosted at Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak.
Their last event, which was in 2017, featured performances by huge Electronic acts such as Kygo, Hardwell, Zedd, Slushii, Nicky Romero, and Getter, who played for thousands of people, including those who were already here in Bali and those who flew in just for the festival. Future dates for Ultra Beach Bali have yet to be announced, leaving EDM fans thirsty for the fusion of Electronic Dance music and Bali’s atmosphere.

Gypsy Land Music And Arts Festival
You cannot experience Bali’s nightlife without getting a taste of Techno, which has a strong presence in nightclubs here. From Minimal to Hardcore, Bali continuously serves a diverse platter of Techno for vacationers, locals, and expats who seek a night out for the books. Gypsy Land Music & Arts Festival offers you an eccentric twist to it all – with costumes, amazing stages and sets, and entertainment which you probably wouldn’t come across at your average festival.
Dubbed as “Bali’s Burning Man,” Gypsy Land is often hosted at Courtyard 66 in Seminyak. The festival features music by International Techno DJs who take control of the decks from mid afternoon until early morning hours, where you can consume your heart’s desire of partying. The stage has seen the likes of Andy Garvey, Muska, Rebel Yell, Francesca Lombardo, and many more notable names in the sub-genre.
While the music plays a major role in the festival, it’s the other activities that draw attention to Gypsy Land. Witness insane performances at the Motorcycle of Death where bikers defy gravity, watch professional boxers face off head-to-head in the boxing ring, or experience Bali’s best skaters showcasing their skateboard tricks. You can also test your own skills with axe-throwing, bull-riding, and even paintball.
The Gypsy Land Music & Arts Festival has something for everyone, even if you’re not into Techno music. Party, dance, ride the Ferris wheel, eat delicious food, and enjoy yourself at the epitome of what would be considered “Weird…yet sexy.”

Bali Arts Festival
Pesta Kesenian Bali or the Bali Arts Festival is the perfect opportunity to truly experience the richness of the traditional art culture in Bali. Annually held at Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre (AKA Bali Arts Centre) in South Denpasar, the legendary festival has been going strong since 1979, becoming Indonesia’s longest-running arts festival. It was founded during the era of governor Ida Magus Mantra who sought to preserve Balinese Culture and revive unknown or forgotten Balinese art forms.
For an entire month, these daily exhibitions will feature villagers from all regions of Bali, kicking off with a grand opening parade at the majestic Bajra Sandhi monument in Renon, Denpasar. showcasing Balinese traditional dances, music, and art. Whether you’re just visiting Bali or have been living here for a while, do not miss this chance to appreciate the unique arts and culture of the Balinese.

Ubud Writer’s And Readers Festival
This annual project is an initiative by the Mudra Swari Saraswati Foundation (Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati) which was founded in 2004. The foundation operates independently as a non-profit NGO whose members aim to develop a series of arts and cultural programs for the community. Their current initiatives include the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, Ubud Food Festival, and the Bali Emerging Voices Festival.
The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival started in 2003 and eventually became SEA’s most notable Festival when it comes to Literature. It brings together hundreds of Indonesia and International writers, authors, activists, and thinkers for a series of events over a period of several days in October. With a different theme every year, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival features workshops, book launches, film screenings, panel discussions, poetry readings, and talks, where both the writers and the audience can share inspirations and ideas.

Balinale: Bali International Film Festival
Bali International Film Festival AKA “Balinale” is Indonesia’s one and only international Film Festival. Every year in Bali it showcases local and international films made by talented individuals in the film industry and is internationally recognized for its programming. Balinale’s diverse agenda during its event consists of both International and Indonesian independent and award-winning fiction films, documentaries, feature-length films, and short films.
The festival was established in 2007 and has been growing rapidly ever since, gaining affiliations with Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Motion Picture Association, ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards, Asian Film Commissions Network, and even Sundance Institute’s Film Forward.

Bali Kite Festival
Did you know: the oldest known image of a kite was found in a Mesolithic-period cave painting in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesi,a on a cosy piece of land called Muna Island. The kite painting has been dated back to 9000 BC and it’s specifically a Kaghati, a type of kite still used to this day by the people of Muna Island.
Kite flying in Bali is not just something the kids do to burn time, it’s a tradition. Kites have been around for quite some time in Bali and have been considered religious by the traditional folk. According to some local historians, the kites were initially used to convey gratitude to the Balinese Hindu Gods and were made in the likes of their Godly images.
During the time of the year when the winds are suitable (usually from July to September), Balinese people of all ages build (or buy) beautifully coloured and designed kites –some of which are massive! Held annually, the Bali Kite Festival is a series of events that take place during this windy phase. Hundreds of villages participate in this competition with some of the most eccentric kites you’ve ever seen! This unique experience is held at Padang Galak Beach (Pantai Padang Galak) in Sanur and is known to attract visitors from outside of Bali.

Nyepi – Day of Silence
If you are ever lucky enough to be in Bali for Nyepi you will experience something truly unique — a complete day of silence across the whole island. Most tourists who don’t know what it’s about freak out. A whole day without the internet?
Nyepi is a Hindu ceremony only commemorated in Bali, Indonesia. It’s a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese, but non-Hindu and tourists must also observe the restrictions on noise and travel.

Bali Spirit Festival

Lively Legian Beach Festival
Nestled between Central Kuta and Seminyak, Legian embraces some of the best of the commercial face of Bali. Bali Classic Motor Show
There’s nothing like seeing a vintage car roll up to the lot, looking equally as stunning as it did in its car commercial back in the day. No matter how old you are, seeing a spotless classic car or bike on the road instantly turns your head. That’s because of the rarity and the fact that it’s probably the last of its kind. Thankfully, the classic car communities around the world devote themselves to the art of maintaining an old beauty and proudly showcasing the cars during car meets and car shows.
The Bali Classic Motor Show is held in Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park and exhibits hundreds of vintage cars and bikes, with some of them being owned by past notable Indonesian figures (such as the 1947 GAZ Chaika Limo, which was gifted by Russia to Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia.) The organizers of this wholesome event hope to bring together car enthusiasts and petrol-heads in Bali to share their love of vintage vehicles with the public.

Dance for Peace Festival
Think Psy-Trance. Now mix that with cosmology, spirituality, and culture, and you’ll get the Dance for Peace Festival. This festival is an electronic dance music event organized to raise awareness for “peace, celebrating love, life, sharing, and wellness.” It is a nonprofit and non-commercial festival in Bali which donates its funds to causes that are working to create a peaceful society.
The Dance For Peace Festival takes you to West Bali National Park to come together for a 2-day experience. For those seeking to transform themselves through art and dance, the grounds include a mainstage, food stalls, a flea market, art space, lounging areas, and a healing zone.
Being far west in Bali, it is recommended that you find accommodation in the area. There are several homestays and hostels, all of which are reasonably priced, and Mimpi Resort Menjangan which offers a special discount of Dance For Peace Festival attendees. Shuttle services for the festival are also available in Kuta and Ubud.

Nusa Dua Light Festival
The Nusa Dua Light Festival, along with the Bali Blues Festival, is another event hosted by the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation. It is usually held in July of every year and is the biggest lantern festival in Bali. Imagine a fun family-friendly environment filled with playful activities, live bands, games and rides for the kids, and heaps of food, all surrounded by thousands and thousands of colourful lights. The festival easily attracts over 10,000 people with its hot air balloon rides and light shows.
Imagine giant lanterns in different shapes and sizes floating around you, kids frolicking everywhere and the enticing smell of both international and local Indonesian foods. The Nusa Dua Light Festival offers a fun atmosphere for families and friends, and a great date idea for a night out with the guy/gal. (hint)

Ombak Bali Surf Film Festival
I know what you’re thinking. “SURF films? That’s a thing!?” It is absolutely a thing and a very intriguing one at that. It’s no question that Bali is known as a top surf destination by surfers from every corner of the globe. In 1972, famed American surfer Gerry Lopez starred in “Five Summer Stories’ and the film gave a worldwide audience to Bali’s waves. Since then, Bali slowly became a surfer’s paradise for advanced surfers and beginners.
Hosted on Asia’s surfing hub, Ombak Bali Surf Film Festival is currently the only annual surf film showcase in South East Asia and it has much anticipation within the surf community. With a curated exhibition of high-quality surf documentaries, short films, animations, and art, the organizers aim to extend beyond the front cover of surfing and raise awareness for the environment and social issues. The festival has been providing a stage for rookies and seasoned directors to showcase their take on the art of surfing and it is the perfect event for those seeking to indulge in their love of all things related to surfing.

Bali Bike Fest
Whether you’re a motorcycle enthusiast or not, you have to admit that the bond between bike owners is very admirable. Big bike owners, groups, chapters, and clubs all over the world share a common love for all beastly, heavy bikes. These communities dedicate themselves to creating a family-style social atmosphere for other riders and also support their local causes. In Bali there are several communities of motorcycle enthusiasts who ride BMW, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, and Triumph.
The Bali Bike Fest has been consistently active for 5 years. Every year, motorcycle clubs from all over Indonesia gather in their respective cities. Groups from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung and other major regions organise amongst themselves and drive together to meet up at Banyuwangi, before riding to Bali to its venue. Each year the location alternates between Singaraja, Denapasar, or Sanur – all of which have strong motorcycle enthusiast communities. During its recent years, the Bali Bike Fest has attracted interest from many motorcycle clubs Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia who now all participate in the festival.
As a free entry for all, the event showcases a range of 1200+ hefty classic and custom motorcycles during the Big Bike Expo. This should be heaven if you’re a bike lover. And if not, maybe you should bring earplugs. The stage hosts a variety of Indonesian bands playing their best of classic rock, blues, reggae, and anything else you can imagine you would listen to while riding a big motorcade. Along with many other activities at the festival, the Bali Bike Festival can give you an insider look at the strong brotherhood amongst riders, and maybe spark an inner petrol-head in yourself.

Ubud Food Festival
There is no shortage of food when it comes to eating in Indonesia. Because of its unification of the diverse islands in the archipelagos, the Indonesian cuisine is made up of foods from all of Indonesia’s regions. While in Bali, you have the chance to indulge in Balinese, Sumatran, Sundanese, and Javanese foods, which are all abundantly available on the island.
The Ubud Food Festival considers itself as a celebration of diversity in Indonesian cuisine. In 2019 the Ubud Food Festival earned its spot as SEA’s leading culinary event, pulling together over 15,000 people over a 2-day period. Foodies who attend can meet and witness the expertise of Indonesia’s most notable chefs, alongside other members in the food industry such as food producers, restaurateurs, beverage producers, and public figures.
The main stage (the Kitchen Stage) plays host to Michelin-starred chefs and Indonesia most renowned kitchen kings, where one can experience fast-paced cooking demonstrations and cooking competitions. This is your chance to witness true culinary passion up close.
Focusing on the richness and diversity of the Indonesian cuisine, the Teater Kuliner Stage is a free experience available to all who attend. The Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) introduced the Bali Heritage Food Festival for tourists who seek to learn more about traditional Balinese cooking as well as other Indonesian regional cuisines. Hosted on Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, the festival features a wide range of programs where one can experience live cooking classes, cooking competitions, spicy eating contests, and several other cooking activities.
Every year, hundreds of Bali visitors from all around the world gather at the Bali Heritage Festival to participate in the programs and try dozens of food stalls. If you’re visiting Bali, this is the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with Balinese cooking experts and try authentic Balinese food.

Debuting in 2019, the Berawa Food & Wine Festival is the first community festival event held in the Berawa area. The event highlights Indonesian and international gourmet dining, drinks, and artisan products in a market-esque atmosphere paired with music and entertainment.
The previous Berawa Food & Wine Festival featured over 30 vendor stalls and an entire day full of activities. Hip-hop dancers, Jazz performances, and DJs, are just some of the entertainment at the event with plenty of kids activities for the little ones. This is not only a perfect opportunity to taste variety of Berawa’s food, but also to sip on some of Indonesia’s notable wine labels such as Hatten, Two Islands, and Plaga.
The festival takes place at Tamora Gallery on Jalan Pantai Berawa, which is branded as a ‘lifestyle shopping arcade’ by the Bali-based Tamora Group. The organisers enforce a strict rule for its F&B vendors to provide a least one unique item on their menu that’s exclusive to the Berawa Food & Wine Festival. In addition to the vendors above, the location itself hosts over 40 shops, all when combined makes for a fun day out with the family to experience what’s trending in Canggu.
