12 Best Rental Scooters in Bali – Which Scooter to Rent?

If you’re on a solo holiday in Bali and you need something simple to get you from A to B, you’re probably already sifting through all the rental scooters in Bali. As you may already know, scooters and motorbikes are the preferred method of transportation here in Bali and the rest of Indonesia.

I have personal experience with most of these scooters and can tell you it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision. The following is a list of the best and most popular scooters in Bali to rent and cruise around Bali, ranging through all the various models, engine sizes, price, and usability.

Tips for Renting Scooters in Bali

Before you go crazy and start browsing through which Bali scooter rental you should grab, I suggest reading through my 14 Expect Tips for Scooter Rental in Bali – especially if this will be your first time in Bali and riding a scooter.

Oops!

Many tourists come to Bali and decide to hop on a scooter to try to give it a go, without any prior experience, and without a helmet – a very common sight. The latest traffic conditions in certain parts of Bali is not for the faint of heart.

Other than being a rookie rider, there are a few other primary factors to look out for when renting and riding scooters in Bali. Go through my scooter guide first, then come back here to see which scooter or motorcycle suits you best.

1. Honda Scoopy

One of the more popular rental scooters in Bali. It’s super lightweight and easy to use, especially for first time riders. It’s relatively basic but has everything you need – 2 wheels and some brakes, right?

The cute retro-inspired design is especially popular among the ladies. It features a curved body and you can spot them around Bali in almost every colour. It’s a simple scooter that offers a smooth ride – the basics of what you need to get you around Bali.

Keep in mind, this is a small bike, with an equally small engine. Depending on the model, you’ll either have a 110cc or 125cc, which is perfect if you cruising around town and staying locally.

If you’re taller or on the heavier side, I would suggest getting a bigger scooter. The same goes for if you’re planning on touring around Bali on your scooter – some roads can be quite steep up north, and the Scoopy may struggle to breathe with 2 adults on its back.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $14 – $17.50

2. Honda Vario

You’ll commonly spot older Varios among the other scooters in Bali cruising around the island. They were known to be on the simple, ‘boring’ end, but the newer models have been updated to keep up with the latest competition.

The newer models of Vario carry a 160cc engine, vs the older 125cc. This means you can have all the power of an NMAX or PCX, but on a smaller bike. My first time giving the newer Vario model a test drive, I was seriously impressed with the performance – which is usually underwhelming when it comes to Varios.

Like the Honda Scoopy, this is a practical scooter to get you from A to B in Bali. The average daily rental price is decent and you’ll have all the latest necessary technology and features as a bigger scooter.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $15 – $22

3. Yamaha Lexi

The Yamaha Lexi sits in somewhat of a middle ground. These scooters in Bali aren’t as common as the rest but are slowly gaining popularity. Lexi is the smaller sibling to the NMAX but a bit bigger in size compared to the Vario and Scoopy.

The Lexi brings a 125cc engine with her. Small, yes, but efficient. The body is somewhat of a hybrid between the NMAX and Vario. The back looks a bit like an NMAX, but the footing area is like the Vario.

Usually with the larger scooters in Bali, the gas tank would be in the middle between your legs. It’s lightweight, fuel efficient, and decently priced. What more can you ask for?

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $15 – $20

4. Honda PCX

Probably one of my favourite scooters in Bali. It’s Honda’s response to Yamaha’s NMAX and you can take this bad boy pretty much anywhere comfortably. It packs a 160cc punch which is suitable for driving around town or taking it for an adventure around East or North Bali.

In terms of design, it has a more sleek look compared to the NMax. It’s quite a comfortable scooter with lots of legroom allowing you to sit back and enjoy a ride without hunching over.

The smart key system is always convenient. As long as you keep the fob in your pocket, you can start your scooter by just sitting on it and pressing the ignition button. Some of the newer models include USB ports in the front pocket which is always a plus if you’re always forgetting to charge your phone.

My favourite features of the PCX are the suspension and handling – no joke, this thing can ride over a speed bump like it never existed, but I don’t recommend trying that. In conclusion (this may be biased), if you’ve already have experience with riding scooters in Bali, go for the PCX.

Fun Fact: PCX stands for Personal Comfort Xaloon. I have absolutely no clue what Xaloon means.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $18 – $24

5. Yamaha NMAX

Almost equally as popular as the Honda Scoopy is the Yamaha NMAX. It’s much larger than the Vario and Scoopy, but smaller than the XMAX. These scooters in Bali are top choice among Russian expats (with every conceivable design and colour) and Balinese teens (with modified, loud mufflers).

The NMax design is more modern and focuses on comfort. The dashboard is digital – gone are the days of looking at analog speedometers! NMax is also quite friendly on the wallet when it comes to fuel. Like the Honda PCX, the NMax features a smart key system. Sit on the bike, press the ignition, off you go.

Average Daily Rental Price: $AUD $18 – $24

6. Honda ADV

This mean-looking scooter has recently become popular among the scooters in Bali. It’s ruggish look features a combat design which makes it seem like it came straight out of the military. Even though it’s slightly smaller than the PCX and NMAX, this scooter is a powerful ride.

The ADV stands for ADVenture, which is exactly what you’ll have with these scooters in Bali. Just like the others above, it’s an improved 160cc engine but for some reason feels faster than the previous 2 scooters mentioned – possibly due to the smaller body.

If you like this scooter, rent the Honda ADV 160 ABS. It has the anti-lock braking system – an awesome safety feature to have in case of the sudden need to apply the brakes. The suspension on the ADV is fantastic, twin shock absorbers in the back and telescopic fork in the front. Smooth ride!

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $20 – $25

7. Yamaha XMAX

This is the older brother of the Yamaha NMAX. Larger, stronger, muscular, and heavier build of a scooter packing a 250cc engine. This machine truly pushes the boundaries of what defines a scooter.

It features a dynamic body design with a combat look similar to the Honda ADV. The seat is ergonomic and super comfortable for the driver and an additional passenger, regardless of their size.

In terms of tech, the display on the newer XMAX scooters in Bali feature smart phone connectivity. This means you can connect your phone and use GPS on the dashboard without having to check your phone for directions. You’ll also have music controls!

Bikago has the Yamaha XMAX Tech Max GT – ABS model (a bit of a moutful), so if you’re considering renting an XMAX, then you might as well go for the best model you can get.

Note: You’ll need an extended motorcycle license and be at least 25 years old to ride this beast.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $40 – $48

8. Vespa LX

Anything Vespa related has a cult following. The brand has established itself as a certified classic over the past few decades due to its simplicity and vintage look. The Vespa LX is a modern equivalent of its predecessors.

If you’re shopping around to rent scooters in Bali and considering a Vespa, you can get the Vespa LX 125 I-GET. It’s a modern twist on the classic look and houses a 125cc engine, which genuinely feels like its more than that due to the body being so lightweight.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $25.50

9. Vespa Sprint

The Vespa Sprint is an alternative to the Vespa LX above but with a 150cc engine. Design wise it’s practically the same, but the body is slightly larger with a more sport look.

One of the key differences between the Vespa Sprint and Vespa LX is the performance. The Vespa Sprint packs a sharper throttle response and handling. Depending on the Sprint model you get, it might even have larger wheels.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $25 – $29

10. Honda CB

We’re now approaching motorcycle territory. Among your choices for rental scooters in Bali, you may want to opt for a motorcycle instead. If you aren’t that familiar with motorcycles as yet, here is where the Honda CB comes in the picture as an entry-level machine.

The Honda CB is essentially the motorcycle version of the ADV – very similar body and power. The CB150X comes with a 150cc single-cylinder engine with an output of 16 horsepower and a 6-gear transmission.

This is a relatively lightweight motorcycle that’s great for touring around Bali. One of the main drawbacks (like with most motorcycles) is the lack of storage. With scooters you’ll have enough storage to at least keep a helmet. With motorcycles, maybe a wallet or small purse.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $20 – $25

11. Yamaha XSR

If you’re already at least a little familiar with motorcycles, why not cruise around in retro style? The Yamaha XSR series of motorcycles are a great alternative option to renting scooters in Bali. You’ll have all performance and classic aesthetics you need to look cool Bali’s streets. Watch out Canggu Shortcut!

The XSR’s engine is a 155cc single cylinder. It’s slightly more powerful than the Honda CB with 19 horses. Trust me, you really don’t need more than that, especially while stuck in Bali traffic you’ll probably stay in 1st and 2nd gear.

In summary, it’s a retro look, combined with modern tech and latest safety features. It’s also being rented at a decent price for this type of motorcycle.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $20 – $26

12. Honda CRF

Off-road enthusiasts, this one’s for you. The Honda CRF is known worldwide for its durability and longevity. Great bikes for both dirt and pavement – both of which are readily available everywhere in Bali.

This Honda CRF150L can be commonly found in Bali. Dual-sport, lightweight, and versatile, with a 150cc single-cylinder engine. You’ll get a 13 horsepower output and a 5-speed transmission.

Not much more I can say here as I’m not quite familiar with off-road bikes. But if you’re already into dirt bikes, then I’m certain you know what you’re getting.

Average Daily Rental Price: AUD $20 – $26

Where to rent scooters in Bali?

Rental scooters in Bali are available every corner. Try walking 10 minutes in any direction and I’m certain you spot someone renting some scooters and bikes. The real question is where can I rent quality scooters in Bali.

You don’t want to rent a cheap scooter from a random hole-in-the-wall shop just to save a few bucks and it breaks down on you halfway from Seminyak to Canggu in the middle of some rice fields – and then charged for the malfunction.

Bikago Scooter Rentals is your safest bet. I must admit, they’re not the cheapest but the prices are still relatively affordable for what you get. They currently have 11 locations all around Bali and even include a pick-up and drop-off service – no need to stress about getting the scooter back in time before your flight.

You rental scooter comes with a full tank of gas, a phone holder, and a first aid medical kid. But my favorite bonus – 24/7 road side assistance. Regardless of the time of day, where you are in Bali, their team will sort you out if you have any issues with your bike.

In summary, Bikago’s rental scooters in Bali include:

  • Extensive quality check – you’ll go through the bike together to make sure everything’s up to par.
  • Full tank of petrol – you’d be surprised how many times I’ve rented a bike before with just a drop of petrol in the tank.
  • Free delivery and pick-up – they’ll bring your scooter to your villa or hotel
  • Unlimited mileage – drive as much as you want
  • 24/7 road side assistance – self explanatory. Any time you’re in trouble on the road, they’ll take care of you!
  • Mobile phone holder – no need to check Google Maps with one hand
  • First aid medical kit – in case of emergencies

Rent and wear a Helmet

Wear a helmet. Not the most groundbreaking advice, I know. But you’d be surprised how many tourists ride around with their scooters in Bali without a helmet! Is it because it messes up their hair? Maybe too hot for a helmet? Perhaps it doesn’t look cool enough? We’ve yet to make a breakthrough with this mystery.

Helmets are cool!

Bikago scooter rentals includes a helmet with their scooters. As a matter of fact, during the checkout process you can select 2 helmets – both are completely free to rent. No need to pay extra. Their helmets are well-maintained and sanitized.

If you’re really insistent on getting your own, brand new helmet, there are tons of shops and stalls around Bali. Helmet prices range from 250k IDR (AUD $25) to 1000k IDR (AUD $100), depending on the helmet model.

Insurance for Scooters in Bali

Upon checking out, you’ll also have the option to add on motorbike / scooter insurance on the Bikago website. I recommend getting it as it’s only about AUD $7 per day. It’ll cover you if your bike needs any repairs or you weere involved in an accident.

In addition to that, if somehow your scooter or motorbike was stolen or became unusable, Bikago will replace it with a new one which you can use until the end of your scooter rental period.

Traveling around Bali with a group

If you’re on holiday in Bali with your family or group of friends, perhaps it’s not practical to just rent an entire fleet of bikes. If you do the math, you’ll actually spend about the same or less if you simply book a private car and driver.

You will get picked up from your hotel or villa in a well-maintained, air-conditioned SUV driven by a friendly, English speaking driver, and taken to explore the destinations of your choice. You can even book consecutive days and your driver will show up at the time you need him. Fuel and taxes all included!
