La Plancha is often one of the first stops for my friends, family and guests when arriving in Bali before sunset. With its iconic rows of brightly coloured bean bags and umbrellas on the beach at Seminyak, it makes a perfect first-night stop to unwind and watch the sun go down while enjoying a cold Bintang or three.

Gorgeous to photograph at sunset, many beachside bars have copied their unique theme, but this is the first and largest with the best sunset DJ sounds on Seminyak Beach.

The tiny kitchen pumps out a huge array of snacks and while the beer sometimes isn’t as cold as it should be, the cocktails are pretty good. It’s more a place to visit for the vibe than the food but it is incredibly popular. When I first started coming here there were around 20 bean bags – that number has now grown to over 100.

Uniquely decorated in drift-wood meets steam-punk style, it’s owned and operated by the same company that runs La Favela, the popular Seminyak nightclub and La Brisa, the beach club in Canggu.

Don’t make the mistake of grabbing the bean bags in the front row if there’s an incoming tide. Expats entertaining friends here often get a great laugh watching unsuspecting tourists resisting the impulse to get up thinking the approaching tide won’t reach them, but it inevitably does, with predictably humorous results.

The sun sets between 6:15 – 6:45 pm between winter and summer, so get here around 5:30 pm if you expect a seat, as it can fill up quickly during the high season between June and September.

Well worth a visit, if only for the wonderfully colourful photos at sunset, La Plancha is one of my recommended Best Bars in Seminyak.
