Tirta Empul
Tirta Empul is unique among the temples in Bali because it allows travellers to engage in the act of purification by bathing in the temple waters. Please know that you absolutely must follow the ritualistic method of bathing and not just jump in and treat this as just another bathing pool.
I’ve been here with friends, family and guests many times, and all my tour guides know how to set you up for an amazing experience.
Receiving blessings under the flowing mouths of the snake-head water fountains is the closest I’ve ever been to a sense of enlightenment – and I say this without religious affiliation of any kind – and connected me with Balinese culture in a way not many people experience.
I highly recommend visiting Tirta Empul, even if you don’t bathe. The waters can be chilly, and the changing rooms are described at best as robust and functional, but the experience is well worth slowing down for a moment and being present.
Tirta Empul is around 15 km from Ubud and only 1.5 km away from Gunung Kawi, so I recommend visiting both if you have time.
