Bali UNESCO Tour Overview

This booking gives you an entire day’s worth of exploring Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a private car and driver. Here is where you can learn more about Bali’s rich culture and history by visiting some of the most majestic temples on the island.

You will start off by visiting Taman Ayun Temple – a 400-year old temple, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple – Bali’s iconic floating temple, Jatiluwih Rice Terraces – the largest rice terraces in Bali, and finishing the day at Tanah Lot Temple – Bali’s famous sea temple.

Taman Ayun Temple

Taman Ayun Temple - Bali UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Pura Taman Ayun, or Taman Ayun Temple, is Bali’s Royal Water Temple in Mengwi. It’s one of the best temples in Bali, known for its serene water gardens and elegant shrines. This temple was built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi and served as a family temple for the royal family.

The entire temple is surrounded by a moat that makes it look like a floating temple. There are several massive courtyards to explore. Taman Ayun officially became a Bali UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, or Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, is one of Bali’s most iconic destinations and the first image you’ll see if you Google anything about Bali. It’s a beautiful temple on the shores of Lake Beratan in Bedugul and appears to float on the lake.

Ulun Danu Beratan is an absolute must-visit at some point your Bali trip. Take this opportunity to get mesmerized by this photogenic temple with it’s misty surroundings and cool mountain air.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Jatiluwih - Bali UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Located in the Tabanan Regency, the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is a vast collection of rice terraces that span over 600 hectares of land. Picture lush green rice terraces that stretches far beyond the horizon.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces aren’t just a visual marvel. It’s a testament to Bali’s deep-rooted agricultural heritage. Walking through the rice terraces, you can encounter small shrines, temples, and local farmers. Jatiluwih is much less touristy than Ubud’s Tegalalang Rice Terraces.

Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot - Bali UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Pura Tanah Lot, or Tanah Lot Temple, is one of the most dramatic images of Bali. It’s a sacred temple that’s perched on a rock just off of the shore. With the sunset in the backdrop, it’s like witnessing a wallpaper in person.

Although it’s not actually part of the Bali UNESCO Sites, Tanah Lot Temple is perfect for a last stop of the tour – ending the day with a beautiful sunset by the ocean.

A Quick Summary of Bali’s UNESCO Sites

Bali’s UNESCO sites aren’t about ticking off individual landmarks. They’re about understanding how the island functions as a whole.

The main designation is the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, UNESCO’s official label for the Subak irrigation system.

This recognition covers the relationship between water temples, rice terraces, farming communities, and religious practices that have shaped Bali for centuries.

Sites like Jatiluwih, Taman Ayun, and Tirta Empul all fall under this same cultural landscape, even though they look very different on the surface.

Separately, Mount Batur is recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, valued for its volcanic landscape rather than cultural systems. It’s a different category, but still an official UNESCO site in Bali.

This is why the Bali UNESCO tour works best as a single, well-planned route. When you see the temples, water sources, rice fields, and landscapes in order, the connection becomes obvious.

  1. Hi Michael,

I would like to do the Bali UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tour. Is it possible to start the tour from Kuta and get dropped at a hotel in Ubud at the end of the tour? This may require some change in the itinerary, for eg. doing Tanah Lot temple first.

    • Hi Achyut,

Yes, of course. You can set you pick-up location in Kuta, then end the day in Ubud.
Great idea on hitting Tanah Lot first.

      Safe travels,
      Michael
