Since it’s one of Bali’s most recently popular places, getting from Bali Airport to Canggu can be quite the mission. This is why choosing the right method of transport is important. Here are my tips and options for getting to Canggu without the headache.

1. Preparing to arrive at Bali Airport

The first thing you’ll need to sort out before arriving at Bali Airport is all the important documents to get through immigration with ease. Getting these in order will decrease the amount of time you spend at the airport.

Bali Visa on Arrival

You will likely need a visa to enter Bali, unless you’re coming from one of the Visa Exemption Arrangement (VEA) list of countries. To grab your Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA), you can apply online on the official eVisa website.

Bali Tourist Tax

As of February of 2024, the new Bali Tourist Tax is effective. This tourism levy is IDR 150k (AUD $15.00 / USD $9.20) per person and can be paid online or at Bali Airport.

Indonesian Health Pass for Bali

All international travelers to Bali must complete the Indonesia Health Pass – a simple form that declares your health conditions and travel history. The Health Pass is free and should be filled out for every accompanying passenger.

2. How far is Canggu from Bali Airport?

The distance from Bali Airport to Canggu depends on where exactly you’ll be headed. Generally speaking, the town of Canggu refers to a collection of small villages or areas like Berawa and Batu Bolong.

In many cases, newcomers to Bali might also include Pandang Linjong, Pererenan, and Seseh as part of Canggu due to their AirBnb or villa booking mislabelling their addresses as Canggu. These areas are slightly further west.

Depending on the route, Canggu is about 17 – 20 kilometers from Bali Airport. This journey can range anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on the time of day you’re arriving.

3. Book an Airport Transfer in advance

Booking a Bali Airport Transfer saves yourself the headache of finding transportation from Bali Airport to Canggu. It’s easy, affordable, and stress-free.

I have personally vetted all the drivers I work with and have received excellent reviews from my guests.

Bali Airport Transfers - Driver Pickup

My drivers personally update me directly when they arrive at Bali Airport, after they collect you, and once again after you’ve been dropped off at your hotel or villa safe and sound. I also email you their name, profile photo, vehicle, and personal phone number to ensure your safety and comfort.

After a long flight to Bali and having the stress of navigating through the chaos at Bali Airport, a first-class airport transfer service is exactly what you need.

4. Using a Hotel Shuttle Service

Depending on the hotel or villa, they may offer an in-house airport shuttle service from Bali Airport to Canggu. Keep in mind, these have different levels of quality and the experience can be a toss up.

While some airport shuttle service are private, some are shared or partnered with other hotels to cut back on transportation costs. If you’re exhausted after a long flight, being in a vehicle with total strangers might not be the best experience.

Important reminder: If you’re booking a hotel shuttle service from Bali Airport to Canggu, make sure you read their terms and conditions regarding how long the driver can wait for you. In many cases, there is a time limit. So if your flight is delayed, you’ll need to look for alternative options.

Hint: My Bali airport transfer service is flexible. If your flight is delayed or you’re stuck in immigration, my drivers will adjust and wait for you if needed – at no extra cost.

Some hotels or villas in Bali may already include a free airport transfer service that’s part of your room booking. If you manage to score this, go for it to save some extra cash.

5. Bali Airport to Canggu with Scooter

If you’re on a solo trip to Bali and you’re traveling relatively light, renting a scooter in Bali can be a great method of making your way from Bali Airport to Canggu.

I highly recommend renting a scooter with Bikago Scooter Rental. They’re an affordable rental service, trustworthy, and can deliver your scooter to the airport (see their booking form).

Oops! Not the most ideal situation.

Another major plus is that you’ll have the flexibility to get to Canggu from Bali Airport at your own pace. You can take your time, stop for food, or take a rest whenever you please.

Bear in mind, the traffic to Canggu from Bali Airport is notorious for being congested during certain times of the day – especially once you enter Canggu. You’ll need a bit of confidence for this journey.

If this will be your first attempt at riding a scooter in Bali, I don’t recommend it. Wait until you arrive in Canggu to rent a scooter and practice on smaller village roads with less traffic.

6. Using Taxi Kiosks at Bali Airport

Bali Airport to Canggu - Arrivals

Taxi Kiosks can be found inside the arrivals area at Bali Airport near the exit doors. It’s a strange process of booking a taxi here – You get issued a ticket then a staff goes outside and picks a driver. Huh?

The upside to this is that you’ll be able to establish a set price from the start without having to negotiate with drivers (which is migraine-inducing after a long flight). Price range here can be anywhere from AUD $40 – $60 from Bali Airport to Canggu.

The downside: you’re not guaranteed good service and you’ll have no idea who this driver is. If you have a bad experience, there is no way to leave a complain or review.

7. Grab or GoJek Service

Bali Airport to Canggu - Grab Car and GoCar

The most popular ridesharing apps in Bali are Grab and GoJek. There is no Uber or Lyft in Bali.

After arriving at Bali Airport and successful passed through immigration, maybe your way to the official Grab Lounge. It’s a bright green corner and you can’t miss it. Grab staff on site can help you with booking a taxi to Canggu.

There is a bit of a downside to this. If Bali Airport is busy and several flights have arrived, you’ll need to wait for the car you booked as there is a queue. This can sometimes by a 20 – 40 minute wait.

Expect to pay anywhere from AUD $45 – $60 for a Grab car from Bali Airport to Canggu.

8. Freelance Taxis at Bali Airport

Ah yes, the infamous ‘taxi vultures’ loitering, waiting patiently for their next victim. This is your greeting party when arriving at Bali Airport.

These are usually independent freelance drivers that linger at arrivals, soliciting their taxi or driver service to passengers who have just landed. They’re known to be quite pushy.

If this is the transport method you plan on choosing to get from Bali Airport to Canggu, you will need to dust off your negotiation tactics. Let the games begin!

These taxi drivers operate without any meters or apps. If you aren’t familiar with common local rates, this is the best way to get ripped off. Be firm with your proposed price and feel free to move on to the next guy. Perhaps host an auction?

9. Blue Bird Taxi at Bali Airport

Bali Airport to Canggu with Blue Bird Taxi

The largest and most known taxi fleet in Bali is Blue Bird Taxi. You will see these pretty much anywhere in Bali.

While they can drop off passengers at departures, they do have some restrictions with picking up passengers from Bali Airport.

If this is your preferred method of getting to Canggu, a common hack is to walk to the departures area and grab a Blue Bird Taxi from there – not the best option if you have multiple bags and luggages.

10. Bali Airport to Canggu via Public Bus

Bali has a new public transportation system called Teman Bus. It operates routes through most areas of South Bali but currently has no routes from Bali Airport to Canggu.

If you’re on a tight budget, this can be an affordable method of getting from Bali Airport to Ubud, or anywhere in Denpasar. Keep in mind this can be inconvenient, especially with connecting routes and traveling with multiple luggages.

11. Bali Airport to Canggu at Night

Making your way from Bali Airport to Canggu at night is a generally straightforward journey. A major positive is that it’s less time-consuming than during the day due to lighter traffic.

The main issue will be your limited options for transportation to Canggu. There are less airport taxis and shuttle services at night. You’ll have to choose between grabbing a taxi (if any), or haggle with one of the taxi vultures – but do you really want to do that at midnight?

My Bali Airport Transfer service guarantees a driver will be waiting at arrivals for you regardless of your arrival hours – whether 11:00 pm or 4:00 am. The last thing you want when arriving at these hours is having to stress about making your way to your hotel or villa.

In general, traffic from Bali Airport to Canggu will be much light and the weather will be much cooler than in day time.

12. How long does it take to get to Canggu?

Blue Bird Taxi – from AUD $45 – $65 / USD $28 – $40. Friendly drivers but not always good service.

Freelance Taxis – from AUD $45 – $80 / USD $ 28 – $50. I’ve also heard of guests paying higher. You’ll need to negotiate and learn some “walk away” tactics.

Grab Lounge at Bali Airport – from AUD $40 – $60 / USD $25 – 40 (sometimes less). A great option and can sometimes be quite fast to get a car and driver. However, the wait can be long depending on how packed the airport is.

Scooter Rentals – from AUD $10 – $20 / USD $6 – $12 per day, depending on the type of scooter you rent. This is the cheapest method of getting from Bali Airport to Canggu if you’re traveling alone.

14. Download WhatsApp

One of the first things you should do when you land at Bali Airport (ideally before you even board your flight), is download WhatsApp.
